COUNTERMAPPING MANIFESTO

All projects build on visual methods that explore & represent information, data and cultural practices. The term countermapping is Inspired by the term attributed to Nancy Peluso (1995), who wrote about the production of maps by Indigenous forest users in Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) to tell their own narratives of place and to push back against hegemonic definitions of land.

We use the term here as a conceptual guide to making visible overlooked or undervalued activities - often generated by communities or groups under threat of displacement or forced relocation by larger, more powerful stakeholders
